I Got to Run!

I ran! And wrote a really long post about how I'm feeling! Here we go...

Since getting back from Asheville, I’ve been trying really hard to get back into a workout routine, to make it easier when I get cleared to run (or so was my intention). Truth be told, I forgot how hard (and tiring, stressful, annoying, etc.) training is… especially when I don’t have 7 full days to get things done and I try to cram things into 3-4. Dumb Jenna and any other Type-A athlete out there; it’s nearly impossible and probably not smart to fit 8 workouts into 4 days.

During my first week back, I did get my dream schedule of workouts in:

-       4 swims (1600m, 1000m x 2, 750m)

-       2 spinning sessions (15-30 minutes, 60 minutes)

-       4 core sessions post swim/bike

-       Yoga (x 1-2)

-       Lifting (x 2)

But that was only because I was actually in Boston for a week straight (I’m currently dreaming of this…) and I need to do a better job remembering that when I’m traveling to 3 corners of the country over the next 2 weeks.

I was also cleared last Wednesday to run .5 miles (YAY!). I had completed my .5 mile of jumping exercises successfully (Day 1: 1 time through; Day 2: 2 times through; Day 3: 3 times through; rest day; Day 5: 3 times through; rest day; Day 7: 3 times through) and had zero-little pain—only when I was doing single leg squats with the TRX. Tom-- my PT who I have a love/hate relationship with because he fixes me, but also calls me an asshole for being crazy—tested my leg strength, took me through a series of warm ups, then let me run for .5 mile while watching and recording me. After my run, while I felt like I just ran a half marathon, we watched the video of me running, using Hudl (possibly the greatest software for athletes who want to work on their form) to see what I needed to work on.

We found that I was shortening my stride on my right side, as a preventative measure, thus dipping my left hip a bit more than I should. Giving me some exercises to work on, in addition to the new lifting plan my friend Jeremy made me (that’s currently kicking my butt), I was cleared to run .5 mile 2 times a week, with 1 set of jumps and some bounding exercises as a warm up. While adding this into my routine, I need to work on lessening my expectations of my dream workout schedule (seen above) as to not overload my body. As we’ve seen before, overloading and stress = injury. And I don’t have time to be injured anymore!

After a full week in Boston, and a weekend including breakfast tacos and Guinness braised pot roast with Jon, I started to get ready for my trip to New York City, then Irvine, CA, then back to Boston to head to Hannah’s Bachelorette party. Honestly, just thinking about it makes me exhausted, which I’m going to attribute to why I’ve been so tired lately. Mentally and physically tired = need more sleep = less time for working out = an endless cycle of wanting to do more but can’t.

My trip to NYC with Jon was great, but made me very much happy that I live in Boston, since the city always tires me out. We arrived on Thursday so speak on a panel at General Assembly about Wearable Technology. I learned almost everyone wears a Fitbit AND a Garmin, and that I STILL get nervous public speaking.

The next day after November Project NYC (where I skipped the workout to do core with Kaitlin, then ate some bagels), I headed to New York Sports Club to get on the bike and in the pool. Man oh man, I promise to never complain about Boston Sports Club’s pool again after seeing that one… 17 yards, muggy, and bugs on the deck. WOOF. After that, I spent the day working at my friend Lauren’s co-working space (WHERE THERE WAS A DACHSHUND! HI WINSTON!). I was able to grab dinner with @KellyKKRoberts of Run, Selfie, Repeat, to hear about her latest BQ or Bust effort (and all the other cool stuff she’s working on, like her podcast). After work I headed to Daily Harvest, the delivery smoothie company that makes my life 100x easier, to say hi, then I got drinks with Lauren and our friend Jess from high school. The night ended with a going away party for one of my friends from NP NYC (however we just said, “See you later!” since she’s moving to San Francisco and we all know that I live there).

Saturday morning my friend Alex and I grabbed breakfast at The East Pole, then did some shopping. Alex was heading to see The Knocks that night and wanted something fun to wear, and I will rarely say no to shopping (funny, I know, since all I wear is Lululemon). I found a leather jacket at Zara that Alex loved, and since she works in fashion and knows everything, I broke my “no more jackets” rule and bought it. Plus, my good friend from work who always wears a leather jacket, Ellen, had just left, and I needed to channel my Inner-Ellen somehow. After shopping, I went to my first Soul Cycle class with my friend Melanie, before grabbing lunch with my old roommate, Kelly. After that, I trekked home to NJ to have dinner with my parents and grandpa, and spend the night on my couch with my dog, Max.

The weekend was fun, but exhausting, and I’m honestly glad I wasn’t in Boston. This weekend was the last long run before the marathon, and thousands of people run the course for their 20 miler. As selfish and silly as it sounds, seeing everyone running made me upset that I (A) can’t run for more than .5 mile right now and (B) can’t run Boston this year, especially since I trained so much/hard last year, and spent so much time raising $7,500 for Back on My Feet. Again, however stupid, I just need to do the best I can to remind myself that my body needed this time off and there will be another Boston (and fundraising goal) next year.

Since I was feeling so bummed, I was glad to get back into Boston able to hop in the pool before grabbing dinner with my #LadyQuadSquad. Jana, Britto, Carolyn, Julia, and I munched on bowls from b.good (I love my sweetgreen, but these are so good) and caught up on life, especially Jana’s first race since coming back from her injury. She ran 13.1 miles at an 8:10 pace… talk about #goals. Julia made an amazing cake (complete with figurines of us all), because she’s the greatest. Side note, we will now start going by “The Hair Band”, as inspired by these male soccer players turned girl figurines. I’m so grateful for friends that will make the time, and can instantly make me feel better no matter what mood I’m in.

Yesterday I headed to work for the only day this week, and was greeted with a box of goodies from my friends at Juice Press. JP is opening in Seaport this week and I although I can’t make the grand opening, they hooked me up with some snacks for my trip! I’m so excited for another healthy dining option around work. After work, I headed to the gym for Week 2, Day 1 of death by Jeremy. We’re focusing a lot more on my lower body this round of training, and man, everything hurts! I ended the night making a quick taco hash for Jon and me, complete with leftovers for Jon to much on. The whole meal took 20 minutes, and is definitely turning into a go-to on busy nights.

I’m on my way to Irvine now (with a quick layover in Seattle), and am going to do my best to not freak out about my lack of workouts for the week (again, back to my endless cycle of stress, being tired, and wanting to do more) and instead enjoy the 70* weather.
